Groundbreaking of Meridian Apartments – 100 Units of Affordable Housing

Los Angeles, CA – On February 11, 2016, Korean Churches for Community Development (KCCD) and AMCAL Multi-Housing, held a groundbreaking ceremony of Meridian Apartments, that will provide 100 units of affordable housing to low income families in Koreatown. Located between Beverly and Vermont, the project is projected to be completed by Fall of 2017.

Hyepin Im, KCCD President and CEO, stated “KCCD is excited to be a partner with AMCAL in bringing in 100 units of affordable housing to the Koreatown and Hollywood neighborhoods. Affordable housing is in high demand in Los Angeles but also in Koreatown. Koreans and the other residents of Koreatown have one of the lowest income levels in the country. In addition, senior poverty for Koreans is one of the highest, if not the highest of any group in Los Angeles. This affordable housing project next to the Metro will be a welcomed and long overdue service that will be embraced by the community. We thank the various partners who worked with us to advocate for this project and have helped to bring it into reality. We look forward to being part of the solution in providing housing to the families who need affordable housing. A big thanks to AMCAL who has led this project!” KCCD would like to thank our financial partners, which include Union Bank, Los Angeles City Housing and Community Investment Department, and the State of California Department of Housing and Community Development.

In addition, KCCD would like to thank Caroline Sim, Leslie Lambert and Yonah Hong, formerly with CRA, Victor Narro, former CRA Board, Barbara Corkrey and Fernando Gaytan of Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles as well as Nona Randois also formerly with Legal Aid, and community nonprofits, including KIWA (Alexandra Suh, Danny Park, Eileen Ma), KAC (Grace Yoo), PAVA (Chang Lee, Robert Ahn andTiger Kang), Tak Suzuki with Little Tokyo Service Center as well as Daniel Lee and James Huang.

AMCAL & KCCD Begin Construction on Transit-Oriented Affordable Housing in Los Angeles – Featuring 4,000 sf of Commercial Space, The Meridian Adds 100 Apartment Units to Los Angeles’ Koreatown and Hollywood Neighborhoods

AGOURA HILLS, CALIFORNIA, February 17, 2015 – AMCAL Multi-Housing, long a statewide leader in the development of affordable housing, has begun construction on The Meridian, a mixed-use development in the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Koreatown and Hollywood in partnership with the non-profit Korean Churches for Community Development. Located at 225 N. Vermont Avenue, The Meridian showcases 100 contemporary units, providing a mix of studios, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartment homes with open floor plans, and balconies or patios, as well as 4,000 sf of retail space. “Delivering the AMCAL standard of affordable housing to our communities enhances not only our residents’ lives but also the surrounding neighborhoods,” said Percival Vaz, CEO of AMCAL. “The Meridian’s convenient location in the densely populated neighborhoods of Koreatown and Hollywood will bring 100 much needed residential units to this community. We are excited to begin this phase of development and look forward to creating more housing opportunities for Los Angeles.”

Killefer Flammang Architects created an edgy, contemporary design with vibrant colors, sharp angles and steel accents. Hyepin Im, President of Korean Churches for Community Development, stated “KCCD is excited to be a partner with AMCAL in bringing in 100 units of affordable housing to the Koreatown and Hollywood neighborhoods. Affordable housing is in high demand in Los Angeles but also in Koreatown. Koreans and the other residents of Koreatown have one of the lowest income levels in the country. In addition, senior poverty for Koreans is one of the highest. If not the highest of any group in Los Angeles. This affordable housing project essentially being next to the Metro will be a welcomed and long overdue service that will be embraced by the community. We thank the various partners who worked with us to advocate for this project and have helped to bring it into reality.”

Units in the anticipated LEED Gold certified development will be equipped with Energy Star appliances, vinyl wood plank floors in common areas, carpeted bedrooms, and granite countertops. To help lower living costs for residents, The Meridian will feature Energy Star rated appliances, and exceed California’s Energy Efficient Standards for Residential and Nonresidential Buildings.
Replacing an existing vacant commercial property and parking lot, the convenient location will provide resident access to 4 public schools and colleges, parks, markets, and retail. Located a half-block away from the Vermont/Beverly Metro Red Line subway station, The Meridian will promote a transit oriented ‘green’ lifestyle with dedicated spaces for car sharing, electric charging stations and bicycle spaces. Households will receive one free Metro pass to encourage use of the metro rail system. Vermont Avenue also is designated as a pedestrian street in Los Angeles’s new Mobility 2035 plan. Public improvements include new benches, trashcans, and bike racks along the Vermont Avenue sidewalks.

The Meridian offers residents access to an onsite community room, kitchen, picnic area, children’s play areas, computer room, centralized laundry facilities, and underground parking. Residents will also have access to a variety of complimentary services, including after school programs and educational classes courtesy of LifeSTEPS, a provider of social services for residents.
Financial partners include Union Bank, Los Angeles City Housing and Community Investment Dept., and State of California Department of Housing and Community Development.
