KCCD Hosts Museum of Tolerance Exhibition

On April 30, KCCD as part of its SAIGU campaign, hosted the opening of the SAIGU art memorial exhibit "Civil Space" created by artist Maggie Hazen at the Museum of Tolerance.

"Civil Space: A Transformative Memory of the 1992 Los Angeles Civil Unrest", is the final event of KCCD's seventh-month SAIGU campaign. There was a short opening and introduction of the exhibit and campaign by Hyepin Im, KCCD President & SAIGU Campaign Director, Maggie Hazen, the artist, Eun Jung Park, the Curator and greetings by Liebe Geft, Director of the Museum of Tolerance.

"We believe that (artist) Maggie Hazen's installation is a wonderful way to conclude our seven-month long SAIGU campaign for unity, hope and understanding," said Hyepin Im, founder and CEO of KCCD.

"Not only does Maggie's installation revisit the stories and imagery invoked by the riots, but also encourages all viewers to challenge and change our perception of the future. This is an inspiring message for all of us to have, when thinking about how to move forward together."

Special thanks to Eun Jung Park, the curator and program manager who provided the historical context and artistic criticality of the project, as well as orchestrating a broader programming around the exhibition.

Ms. Park also hosted a successful educational SAIGU panel bringing together a diverse crowd of artists, curators and scholars, which may not have otherwise had the opportunity to convene on riot-related issues. The panel was held at the Museum of Tolerance on May 1st. The speakers including the following artists and panelists: Elaine Brandt, Michael Massenburg, Charles Miller, Maggie Hazen, writer Carol Kwang Park, urban planner/architect James Rojas, and Eun Jung Park. The panel was moderated by Michael Mata.

"Civil Space" is up until May 13^th for visitors to the museum, as well as for the hundreds of children who participate in the MOT's regular rotation of school bus tours of museum exhibits.

Aside from general admission visits, there will also be continuous educational programming through the museum, such as the Place It! Workshops that allow children to imagine and build their own version of Los Angeles, led by Urban Planner James Rojas.

Civil Space will be on display at the Museum of Tolerance from April 27^th to May 13^th.
